Welcome to Middle School Physical Education
Mr. Granados/ Coach G
(951) 672-2400

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Welcome to my physical education class!  My name is Jesus Granados (Coach G) I will be your child’s physical education teacher.  My goal is to provide your child a non-threatening environment that will enable them to learn movement skills as well as have a chance to grow socially and gain movement knowledge.  I believe each child can be successful in my physical education class.  With the help of the community, parents, guardians and staff I believe we can achieve these goals.  In addition our physical education program promotes diversity as a result we will do multicultural activities such as tinikling.  If you have any concerns please contact me via email at jgranados@santarosaacademy.org.
Course Goals and Expectations for 7th - 8th Grade
This class is designed to meet the California Physical Education Content Standards.  In 7th grade the emphasis is risk taking during participation in individual/dual activities.  For example, the student instead of going for easy points during an activity they would try to go for the more challenging points.  In 8th grade the emphasis is using problem solving techniques during team sport activities.  For example, in basketball if the students know that the other team has slashers they might want to play a zone defense.

Classroom Routines
Beginning of Class
  • Come in quietly and have your laptop ready to put away.  If you are taking too long you will lose points on your social skills grade.
  • Once laptop is put away go in the red room and put your backpack in one of the cubbies quietly.
  • Wait outside and I will take role outside.
  • When going to the park we will walk there.  No running on the sidewalk or touching the leaves/trees that will result in loss of points and repeat offenders will get detention.  We ALWAYS STOP at the corner of the drive ways and wait for my signal to continue on.
  • We will always have a warm-up run especially at the park since I will have to set up since I cannot leave the equipment out in the open.
During Class
  • When teaching or directions are being given, you may not leave to get a drink of water or go to the bathroom.  While instruction or directions are being given everyone must squat down or sit down on the blacktop or field.  If the field is wet or the blacktop is hot everyone can stand up, but everyone must be close and everyone must be able to see.
  • When we are in our activities do not ask me to get a drink of water because everyone is allowed to bring a water bottle.  If it is extremely hot I will provide everyone a chance to get a drink of water during activities.
  • If you have a question regarding the activity please raise your hand and I will answer the question(s).
  • Listen for instructions when it comes to getting and using equipment.
  • If a test is being given and your pencil breaks simply get up and get a pencil from the pencil jar.
  • When the whistle is blow stop, look for Coach G and listen.
At the end of Class
  • If a handout is being passed out you may not leave until you receive one.
  • If coming from the park we will walk back and we will ALWAYS STOP at the corner of the drive ways and wait for my signal to continue.
  • If equipment needs to be picked up bring equipment to me and once all equipment is picked up we will start walking back.
  • You will come into the lobby quietly and will pick up your backpack quietly.
  • I will pass out the laptops and students will wait quietly in the hall.
Class Behavior
  • The class will be given a 10 minute mark that they cannot go over.  If the class does not go over the 10 minute mark then they will elect a fun activity from my choices.
  • If the class goes over the 10 minute mark then they will run the mile the following day.
  • A class gets added 30 seconds for infractions such as the class talking when I am talking, the whole class is touching the leaves/trees on the way to the park, the class is loud in the red track room/hallways.
  • With this system the class gets a warning a day which is fair.
  • If a class receives 2 minutes of penalty time (4 warnings) in a day.  The following day the class will do the mile.
Bathroom Use
Students may use the bathroom before I take role.  Students must notify me that they will be using the bathroom so I do not mark them absent.  Bathroom use at the park is only for emergencies.  When going to the park bathroom ALWAYS notify me and you will ALWAYS take someone with you.  Only one pair of boys and girls can go at a time at the park bathroom.  Excessive use of the bathroom at the park will result in losing participation points due to missing class activities.
Cheating
Cheating WILL NOT be tolerated.  Students caught cheating on written tests will automatically receive a zero on the test, parents will be contacted and a referral to the principal will be given.
Non-Participating Students
Physical education is a state requirement.  If your child cannot participate in physical education class due to illness or injury please send a signed note.  A signed note is good for three days after three days a DOCTOR’S note is needed.  If your child is not participating in physical education class they will be given a short written assignment in order for your child to be involved and have an understanding of the day’s lesson.
Parent Communication
  • Appointments can be scheduled with me.  If you would like to schedule an appointment, please call the office and have the secretary leave a note in my mailbox (Mr. Granados/Coach G) with your name and phone number.  I will return your call by the next school day, at the latest to confirm the appointment.
  • If you would like to know your child’s progress at any time please email me at jgranados@santarosaacademy.org please include your child’s name.  Please allow 1-2 days for me to respond.
  • I hope you will be as involved as possible.  If possible be physically active with your child in order to reinforce the importance of physical activity.  Please talk to your student everyday and ask to see if they are studying the material for the unit we are on.  If you have time to volunteer or help out in the class, please let me know via email jgranados@santarosaacademy.org.
